Music

Music is at the heart of our school!
We love to sing, create music and perform.

THE MUSIC CURRICULUM
Each class has four 6/7 week units of music per academic year, delivered in an hour-long lesson each week. In these lessons, the children listen, perform, compose, and evaluate music as they learn about the seven elements that make up music.

SING UP
Sing Up is a national initiative that aims to place singing at the heart of every school child's life. We believe at Almondsbury that singing can change lives and build stronger communities.

sing upEach week in our newsletter there is a SONG OF THE WEEK, which can be found on the Sing Up website: www.singup.org

CONCERTS

instrEvery year the children who learn an instrument in school get the chance to perform in our Music Celebration Evening. The children perform on the stage and are warmly applauded whether they play a graded exam piece or a simple tune. Children who have been learning only a few weeks perform alongside those who have been learning since Y4.

WIDER OPPORTUNITIES
Wider Opportunities evolved from the government promising that all primary aged pupils will have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument. At Almondsbury, we have a rolling programme of musical tuition, delivered by employees of South Gloucestershire Music Hub, ensuring all children have access to a wide range of music experiences.

LEARNING AN INSTRUMENT AT ALMONDSBURY SCHOOL
When children reach Y4, they can opt to have lessons in small groups if 3 or 4 and learn either:

instrVIOLIN, VIOLA, CELLO
CLARINET, SAXOPHONE, FLUTE,
GUITAR, KEYBOARD, DRUMS
TRUMPET, TROMBONE, CORNET

Lessons are taught by South Gloucestershire Music Staff and there is a charge.

LINKS WITH OUR SECONDARY SCHOOLS
The children in Year 6 have the opportunity to work collaboratively with KS3 and KS4 composing music together. Over a period of 4 weeks the children work together at each other's schools culminating in a final performance to parents. In previous years Almondsbury pupils have worked with students from Marlwood Secondary School and Castle School
