Miss Whittingham's class
Welcome to Year 5!
Hello and a very warm welcome to our Year 5 class page! I hope that we all have a fantastic year together and form a safe, happy and caring class, who make great progress with our learning.
Year 5 is a time of fantastic growth, where children become more independent, confident and curious about the world around them. This year, we’ll be diving into exciting topics, exploring new skills and working together to make brilliant memories along the way.
Please speak to me after school or contact me via email if you have any questions, concerns or if you have any positive feedback.
Homework
Homework will be handed out on a Friday. Guided Reading MUST be returned on Tuesday. It is really important that children make an effort to complete homework.
Reading
This term, we will be reading a new text called Darwin's Dragons. The story is told through the eyes of Syms Covington, a young cabin boy and Darwin’s assistant. While on an expedition in the Galápagos Islands, Syms is swept overboard during a storm. He survives and ends up on a mysterious island where he discovers a living dragon - a creature previously thought to be myth. As he struggles to survive and eventually reunite with Darwin, Syms faces difficult choices about truth, science and the fantastical creature he has come to care for.
PE
Our PE days this term are Monday and Thursday. All children should come to school in their PE kit and must also bring a drink.
DT
During term 6, the children will be designing and creating a sustainable bag. The children will need to bring in a pair of old trousers to use as the base material for their bag. Denim material would be the most suitable option.
Our Topic for the summer term will be Darwin and the Galapagos. This will also link with our learning in Science around Evolution and Inheritance. Please see our Topic Knowledge Organiser below for more information. Y5 will head to St Peter's for a France-themed day on 8th July. More details to follow.
