8. Arrays

In the episode, some of the numbers made rectangle shapes. We are going to look at making rectangle shapes today by arranging/putting objects in rows and columns. Rows run from side to side and columns run up and down.
Look at the real life objects arranged in rows and columns and count how many are in each column/row. Note how each row has the same amount and each column. They have to make a rectangle shape like in the Nunberblocks episode. Finally count how many doughnuts/eggs etc there are altogether.
Practise arranging a pile of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 objects in rows and columns.

Yesterday we learnt about rows and columns, remember rows run from side to side and columns run up and down. When numbers are arranged in rows and columns it is called an array.
Look at the pictures below, some are arrays and some are non-arrays. Which are arrays? Remember that arrays have to make a rectangle shape.

Look at the number 8 Numberblock and discuss the different ways we can make it a rectangle shape (1 row of 8, 2 rows of 4, 4 rows of 2). Try making these arrays with cubes.
Now practise making arrays with 10 cubes and then 12 cubes.
